Allergen Reduction Study by Indoor Biotechnologies

Background

To test the ability of Betterair’s Enviro-Biotics® to reduce allergens in a scientific manner, BetterAir contacted Indoor Biotechnologies1, the leader in allergen detection worldwide. Indoor Biotechnologies tested Betterair’s Enviro-Biotics® with two ubiquitous indoor allergens:

  • Dust Mite allergen Der p2 (one of the most clinically relevant allergen worldwide2,3)
  • Dog allergen Can f1 (a major allergen present in dog dander extract4,5)

They incubated Enviro- Biotics® with each of the allergens for an 8-days period, and let the Enviro-Biotics® to do their work. The trial was carried out at Indoor Biotechnologies facility. Indoor Biotechnologies quantified the concentration of the allergens over time with their professional allergen analysis technology- MARIA®6. This report summarizes the preliminary experiment results.

Objective

To understand the efficacy of Enviro-Biotics® in degrading various indoor allergens under controlled experimental conditions (preliminary experiment).

Rationale

Better Air has a patented bacterial system that degrades the allergens in an indoor environment, by using them as a nutrient.

Methods

Indoor Biotechnologies used standard laboratory tubes as the controled environment. They added to each tube a small portion of our Enviro-Biotics® (only 100-200 bacteria as a starting point) and a measured portion of allergen in a scale of thousands of nanograms of each allergen (Der p1: Catalog No. NA-DP2-1, Can f1: Catalog No. NA-CF1-1). The tubes were incubated in a room temperature for 8 days, and samples were taken for bacterial concentration (using a classic microbiology method) and allergen concentration (using the INDOOR MARIA® assay, method used: MARIA SOP-001 ver.1.3).

Results and Discussion

Figures 1 and 3 show that the bacterial growth of the Enviro-Biotics® was 135 and 368 fold higher at day 8 with derp2 and Can f1 respectively.
As demonstrated in figures 2 and 4, the Enviro-Biotics® consume the allergens and decrease the allergen concentration dramatically. In Fig. 2, the Der p2 concentration was below the detectable limit at day 8.

A single Enviro- Biotics® probiotic application has decreased the allergen concentration by 85% and 80% in the allergens Dog-Can f 1 and Dust mite Der p2 respectively within 8 days.

To our knowledge, this is the first controlled experiment which demonstrates allergen consumption by microbes.

The Interpretations of Indoor Biotechnologies (we didn’t touch!)

  1. Since allergens were the only source of nitrogen present for the bacteria to grow, our observations support BetterAir’s view that these bacteria can grow with allergen as a source of nitrogen.
  1. The difference in the rate of growth of bacteria with Der p2 and Can f1 correlates well with the rate of allergen decrease.

Conclusion

Enviro-Biotics® can grow and prosper by using allergens as a nutrient source, hence dramatically decrease the concentration of allergens and reduce the side effects of ubiquitous indoor allergens on the residents.

Background:

To test the Betterair’s Enviro-Biotics ability to reduce allergens in a typical home setting.  Betterair contacted EMSL Analytical, Inc. a leading microbial testing laboratory to analyize microbial samples before and after the introduction of Betterair’s Enviro-Biotics to ascertain the their efficacy to reduce common household allergens.

Sampling: First sample was taken in a family room. Second sample taken one month later in the same location.

Discovery: High level of Dust Mite Allergen (fl), Low level of Dust Mite Allergen (pl) and Moderate level of Cat Allergen.

Trial: A four week testing period of the BetterAir's probiotic purifier was conducted after initial sampling.

Results: Low level of Dust Mite Allergen (pl). All other Allergens were not detected.

Sampling: First sample taken in Master Bedroom. Second sample taken one month later in the same location.

Discovery: Low level of Dust Mite Allergen (fl), Low level of Dust Mite Allergen (pl) and Moderate level of Cockroach Allergen.

Trial: A four week testing period of the BetterAir's probiotic purifier was conducted after initial sampling.

Results: Low level of Dust Mite Allergen (fl). All other Allergens were not detected
